The Art of Smiling: Dental Implants and the Journey to Restoring Confidence and Beauty

Dental Implantation: Also known as tooth implantation, it is a surgical procedure that interacts with the jawbone to support dental fixtures such as crowns, bridges, dentures, facial prosthetics, and also serves as an anchor point for orthodontic appliances. Dental implantation is currently the most significant advancement in the field of dentistry, as it addresses tooth loss without the need to intervene in other teeth. The success of the procedure depends on the biological integration between titanium and bone, where the implant is first placed to grow and fuse with the bone, then an artificial fixture is added to form the teeth. It requires a period of time to ensure the stability and integration of the implant before attaching the artificial part of the teeth, whether it’s a crown, bridge, dentures, after confirming good integration and bone readiness.

When do we need dental implantation? Dentists perform dental implantation to address tooth loss due to decay, gum diseases, and injuries.

Steps of the dental implantation process:

  1. Implantation: The dental implantation process involves inserting a titanium screw into the location of the missing tooth, where the screw is used as a strong base to secure the artificial tooth. The abutment is placed over the screw, and then covered with the crown (artificial tooth) to replace the missing tooth. The screw is usually made of titanium. The procedure involves stimulating the gums and drilling a hole in the jawbone to accommodate the screw. Bone grafting may be required in some cases where the bone is insufficient or weakened due to injury.
  2. Abutment: After the area where the screw is implanted has fully healed, an additional hole is made to install and secure the abutment in the middle of the screw. The abutment is also made of titanium. The area is left to heal for several days, and the abutment remains slightly protruding above the gums. A temporary crown can be placed or dentures can be used during the healing period.
  3. Crown Placement: The final step in the dental implantation process is placing the crown on the abutment. The dentist takes samples of the shapes of the surrounding teeth to manufacture a crown that matches the natural teeth, during the recovery period from the previous two stages. In the case of front teeth, the crown color is matched as closely as possible to the natural tooth color to achieve harmony and consistency in the smile. The crown is then fixed onto the abutment to complete the implantation process.

The full period for undergoing dental implantation: Dental implantation may require an extended period, typically ranging from three to six months, to achieve full integration between the implant and bone and their coordination. After this stage, the last two steps are completed within a week to ten days.

It is emphasized to give the body sufficient time to heal during each stage of the implantation process. If the dental practitioner sees a need for bone patching surgery before starting the implantation process, it may take additional time.

If you intend to undergo dental implantation, it is encouraged to schedule a consultation with a dentist at the Dental Center at Weshthani Hospital. The specialist will provide necessary guidance and direct you properly to ensure the success of the procedure and achieve the desired results.
